I'm not entirely sure, and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I think it's the camera that follows your movement. I've been meaning to try it because I hate that after I die, I have to change the view. Maybe free camera is that it doesn't stay in the fixed position. Try it and see if you notice a difference.

If you use the "R" key to autorun or hold down the "W" key, normally if you change the camera view, the character will run in the direction the camera is pointing. If you hold the "Free Camera" button down, you can change the camera view without changing the direction the character is running.

May not be all that useful, which is probably why there is normally not a button assigned to it.

Yeah, basically it allows you to move your character in the same manner as the Neverwinter Nights games or Grand Theft Auto games to name a few.

it was really annoying when that happens by pressing some combo of mouse keys.... and I could not get it out... can one tell me how to get it into that mode and get out of that mode?

I don't think it's on by default, but to get to what he's talking about hit F11, go to the Control tab and scroll down to the option Camera: Free Camera. If you click on that, then the key assignment will show in the left side window. Just clear it or reassign it if that's what's giving you problems. It only works if you are pressing the key though, so I'd be surprised if that were it.

You can create a similar effect by having your character run to a specific point (either by clicking on the ground far away somewhere, or targetting something and hitting the space bar) then click and hold the right mouse button and start moving the mouse around.
